There are many variations of this story to be found on the Internet, but it is generally acknowledged that they all derive from The Star Catcher, written in 1979 by American author Loren Eiseley.

The story illustrates perfectly how even the smallest act can make a big difference to the recipient.  This is one of our favourite online versions.
